Swedish Death Cleaning, not as morbid as it sounds.
June 6th marks the National Day of Sweden!
Previously this was the Whit Monday public holiday but was changed in 2005, resulting in less days off work.
But why are we at So Fresh & So Clean talking about this.
Well, did you know in Sweden they have a cleaning practise called döstädning. Dö meaning death, and städning meaning cleaning.
Whilst this may sound a little odd, this Swedish practise is meant to help lessen the burden on your family when your time in a physical life comes to an end.
It was in 2017 that author Margareta Magnusson coined the phrase in her book “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter”. The idea behind this concept is that you work to clear anything you no longer need in your home, including those ‘just in case’ items, so your loved one’s are free to grieve in celebration of your life after passing.
There are 7 keys steps to this concept.
- Step 1: Let Your Loved Ones Know. …
- Step 2: Start With Less Personal Items. …
- Step 3: Gift Possessions Away Gradually. …
- Step 4: Keep Mementos for Yourself. …
- Step 5: Donate and Sell the Rest. …
- Step 6: Make a List of Important Documents and Passwords. …
- Step 7: Declutter Regularly.
