Inclusivity Goes Beyond The Workplace.
We’ve recently carried out a home assessment for a client who is looking to have their carpets cleaned. A normal service for anyone to book and receive. It’s not unusual to be able to take details over the phone and provide a quote. But, what happens when you have a client with additional needs? Sadly, we discovered we are the ONLY carpet cleaner in the area that would carry out a site visit before giving a price and booking the job in.
We don’t want to shame any businesses or try to highlight how we are better than others. We were extremely disappointed, in 2024, that some companies are not thinking about being inclusive to ALL clients at a base point. There doesn’t need to be any costly expenses to bring in a business consultant to show you how to be inclusive. It should be normal practice to not need to exclude any human from the services you provide.
The client has a family member with a medical condition which means they spend a high percentage of their time lying on the floor as they can not stand or sit. Understandably, the client wanted us to visit to go through how operationally the job could happen on the day, how long the carpets will take to dry and how this will affect the medical routine of the client, all normal things to consider, yet they had to call around numerous businesses to find one that would visit them.
There is also the element of having a cleaning technician that they feel they could trust to be in their home, a visit was essential.
We feel proud as a company to be as inclusive as possible. We also feel this shouldn’t be a ‘niche’ or a ‘selling point’. It should be normal. We’ve come a long way from where we were in society in making all spaces inclusive to all. However, we also need to accept that we still have a way to go. This client should have had the same opportunity to receive a few quotes before making their decision. They shouldn’t have to just be grateful that there’s ONE company out there that could help them. This is not equality.
Do we truly appreciated how hard it is for a person/family living with disability? How hard it is to book and receive services that we would usually find simple?
As a business owner, when implementing inclusive policies, are you including your clients? Are you including your service providers as well as your team members?
